The club decided not to go this year, but since I had already paid for the hotel I figured we would go down and see if I could get on a crew “free agent” style. I went down in the morning and found a sign up sheet at the SCORA desk with crews looking to fill seats. Oceanside Outrigger Canoe Club was looking for a guy to fill a seat on a co-ed open team for the long course. Almost got to go in an unlimited canoe, but ended up in seat 3 with a great crew. I have to say Oceanside is a fantastic club with a lot of racers and canoes. They were so nice to me and we hammered it. Slowly inch by inch we passed one after the other. The Co-eds started 5 or so minutes after the women so there were a lot of canoes in front of us. But after I while I noticed they were all women, I didn’t see another co-ed crew around us. The canoe felt great and we caught some good bumps and managed to finish in second place! Big mahalo to my adopted crew.
