Our condo is directly across the street from Kamaole III Beach. This is is the southern most of three beach parks along South Kihei Road. In Hawaiian they are spelled “Kama’ole”, with an okina (like an apostrophe), but the locals just call them the “Kams”. Kam 2 is a couple of blocks to the north, and Kam 1 is less than a mile north, all within walking distance. Each beach is separated from the other by rocky outcroppings, which provide good snorkeling with plenty of fish to see (and the occasional turtle). A large grassy field separates the beach from the road, with trees for shade, picnic tables, restrooms, and outdoor showers. Here is a webcam. Here is another webcam.
The waves are usually gentle and great for kids to play in. The beaches in Kihei are often still sunny when other parts of Maui are overcast. Typically, in the afternoon just as the beach gets hot, the trade winds start up and cool things down to “just perfect”. The sunsets are amazing in Hawaii, but they are especially amazing here. People come from other parts of Maui to watch the sun go down at Kamaole beach. For more information check our blog entry for other great snorkel spots.
