My good friend and New Brighton Middle School teacher Joanne Roster organizes a ukulele club for the students. I was blown away by how great these kids are!
Here are some videos of their recital.

If you are going upcountry you might want to stop along the way at the Surfing Goat Dairy. You can feed the goats and get a tour of the facility. Take a taste of all the different cheeses. They are so cute!

What a blast this race was! I mean literally… a BLAST of wind the whole way back! So exciting to start right under the Golden Gate. Super tough competition in men’s open, but we were NOT last. I was stroker this time and thank God I had brudah Bob D behind me to help me out when my rate was dropping. I’m so appreciative of all the mentoring from na kumu hoe. DL gives me his winning cup. I’m sure the dude has like 600 of them but still I will never forget that. A tear was welling up in my eye as I wrote that, I’m such a pussy. Mahalo nui loa to the crew in my boat Bob D, Bill, Dave K, Jason, Rich.
This was a fun race with me in #2. It has an interesting end where I had to jump out on the beach and run to the flag. I had EPIC FAIL getting out of the spray skirt and although I sprinted my ass off on the beach I could not catch the guy in front of me. Another 6 feet and I would have had him. There is always next year 🙂 Thanking my crew Andrew, Ben , Carter, John, Rich.
I wasn’t signed up to race this race but due to injuries and other problems the outrigger club needed an extra person and at the last minute called me up to fill in. We drove down to Santa Barbara the next evening and stayed over for the race the next morning. This was my first real race and I was put into seat two. I had the time of my life and made some memories I will never forget. I want to thank my crew for letting me be a last minute part of their fun; Andrew, Carter, Dave K, Shiloh, and Rich.
I first heard Eric’s music on Lani B’s Wiki Wiki Wednesday show. His version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah is hauntingly beautiful. I had to IM Lani to find out who this was because I had to have that CD immediately! Once she told me it was Eric Lee I went to his website and bought his first CD Crossroads. This came signed by Eric and on the first play I was a huge fan. I instantly recognized other songs from Lani’s show; Ku’i Ka Lono, Love Song of Tahiti, and others. A few months later he came to Pono Grill for a great show. Soon after he released his next album Kawehilani. Again I went to his website and bought the disk. Again it came signed! Another amazing CD every song is great (my favorite song is Hokulea Hula).
Iris and I saw him again July 1st and this time he brought his band – bass and drummer. Wow what a great show! Of course he got the local hula school dancers out on the floor. Thanks Eric!
Pono Hawaiian Grill is THE spot in Santa Cruz for live Hawaiian music. Every Friday night they have a different artist. Brudah Bill Dean is the mastermind behind the music scene at Pono and does an excellent job getting the best acts into our little town (how does he do it?) Mahalo nui loa Bill for all the music. The food is ono too! We are there most Fridays, if you see us come over and say aloha.
If you enjoy Hawaiian music like we do, you should know about Wiki Wiki Wednesday. Each Wednesday from 6AM to 9AM Pacific time Lani B has her show on KZSC radio. KZSC is the radio station for the University of California at Santa Cruz and you can tune in if you live in the Santa Cruz area on 88.1 FM or online from anywhere here. We are proud to be a sponsor of Wiki Wiki Wednesday, listen for our shout out every Wednesday. Lani also has a show on KHDC radio 90.9 FM on Sundays from 2 to 6PM.
If you are on Maui during the first Friday of the month you have to go to Wailuku for First Friday party. The street is closed down and there is food, music, and things to buy. We went and were fortunate enough to see Justin Young play. I think his One Foot On Sand album is just great.
So there I am sitting on the curb listening to Justin Young and I look over and there is Derick Sebastian sitting there with his family listening too. Derick is an AMAZING Ukulele player that plays sometimes at the Slack Key Show in Napili and at Kaanapali. You should check his music out. He also came to our home town in Santa Cruz and played at Pono Hawaiian Grill.
