Justin Young Wailuku First Friday

If you are on Maui during the first Friday of the month you have to go to Wailuku for First Friday party. The street is closed down and there is food, music, and things to buy. We went and were fortunate enough to see Justin Young play. I think his One Foot On Sand album is just great.

So there I am sitting on the curb listening to Justin Young and I look over and there is Derick Sebastian sitting there with his family listening too. Derick is an AMAZING Ukulele player that plays sometimes at the Slack Key Show in Napili and at Kaanapali. You should check his music out. He also came to our home town in Santa Cruz and  played at Pono Hawaiian Grill.

Hapa

We have loved the music of Hapa over the years in each of its incarnations. We are lucky to live in one of the towns in California that they visit regularly. We saw them at the Rio Theater here in Santa Cruz back in April and after the show we met Barry and Ron to have them sign a copy of their new CD Tuahine (FANTASTIC!) and I had also brought along a copy of my all time favorite Maui for Barry to sign. We talked with them for just a bit and Iris mentioned that we would be in Maui the next week. Barry mentioned that they too were going to be back in Maui in the next week and would be playing at Stella Blues.

When we got to Maui the first thing we did was to reserve a table for the show. It was very special dinner show in an intimate setting. After the show we bought another copy of Tuahine for a friend and they were kind enough to sign that one too. And wouldn’t you know it Barry said “Hey Santa Cruz!” to us and we were blown away that he remembered us! I took this picture of Iris with Barry, Ron and Radasha.
